Self Care to keep you sane with the kids home + Recipes

So the kids are all at home as we are practicing self-isolation with Covd19. Allot of us Mums are even trying our hand at being the school room boss 😬 not to mention refereeing the fights!!!

In our house we chose to do this a bit earlier as Jack our big boy is an asthmatic. He’s actually been pretty good in the last 18months but in his earlier years it was lots of ambulance trips out to bigger hospitals and he even scored a ride on the Westpac chopper once.

Having all 3 kids at home with the 2 big boys doing home school and my 3-year-old wanting all my attention, whilst trying to keep some normality in my own business hours…well it’s been a real juggle.

So if you have found yourself with a new job as full time mum/teacher/cleaner/chef and chief entertainment officer your probably like me and feeling a bit frazzled right now.

All the things that we need to get done (work included) is getting harder and harder to fit in to our schedules... And don’t even get me started on our very unreliable internet here on the farm at the moment!!!

Off course this puts more and more pressure on our time and the way in which we use it throughout the day. You might find yourself getting up earlier or staying up later or physically locking the door on the kids when they go outside 😂 just so you can sneak in 1 thing without being interrupted 10 thousand times with the classic’s -

“I can’t find it”

“He hit me”

“I’m hungry”

“I forgot what you told me to do”

“He called me...”

And the one that absolutely drives me MAD😡

“I’m bored” omg kid you have several thousand acres to explore and play in how the hell could you be bloody bored!!!

I mean seriously do our kids not know how lucky they are to have so much room to play compared to our city or even town friends that are confined to their houses right now...

So whats your coping strategy Mumma (apart from copious amounts of alcohol - off course).

Mine.... its simple... old fashioned fun and Self Care... My priority is to quickly and effectively put as much in my cup as I can every day so that I can handle the chaos thats bound to hit!!!

We have all heard the hype around Self Care and if you have tried to be more conscious of fitting it into your weekly routine then you will have seen the benefits.

It's times like this when we are stressed, overwhelmed, in constant demand and with little free time that Self Care should be a Priority.

I mean it's a PRIORITY for the wellbeing and safety of your family members that you practise self care in some form... otherwise your patience & ability to not lose your shit - well it’s not quite guaranteed!!!

But if we’re going to be able to sneak it in it’s going to have to be quick and effective... if not we all know that it’s not going to get done!

Here’s a list of ideas to get you started

  • Early morning coffee in peace (before the crazy’s get up)... I like to do this one outside admiring the sunrise, listening to the early morning birds, and taking a few deep breaths of uninterrupted fresh air.
  • While you’re up and enjoying some quite time you can plan your day, do a gratitude list, think about your goals, and write a list of all the things your going to buy when you finally buy that lucky scratchy!
  • Exercise time - while listening to a good audio book or podcast or escape to the peacefulness of nature.
  • Meditation (even just 5 minutes of breathing) Try to release your thoughts or follow a guided meditation that can take you through the process.
  • Get showered and dressed and do your god damn Hair (or just put a hat on it). It feels really good to be ready for the day...and it will give you the confidence to feel on top of things.
  • Don’t forget to check in with your friends and have a little giggle to save your sanity - (there likely feeling the same)
  • Journal... You can use prompts or just write anything and everything thats on your mind.  This helps to organise your thoughts, release your doubts and worries, get clarity on situations and create space for creativity and ideas to flow through

Here are some Journal Prompts to get you started…

  • Write a list of 20 things that make you smile...
  • What do you look and feel like when you are most confident?
  • The Words I like to live by are...
  • How might this stressful experience turn you into a better person?
  • What past challenge has turned out to be a gift in disguise?
